Glassware, electronics and artwork need extra care. These ten packing tips will help your fragile items arrive in one piece.
Fragile items are the most likely to be damaged during a move, but with the right materials and technique you can protect them well. Follow these ten tips.
1. Use strong, new boxes
Reused boxes can be weak. Choose sturdy corrugated boxes in sizes that fit the items snugly.
2. Wrap each item individually
Wrap every glass, plate and ornament in bubble wrap or soft paper before placing it in the box.
3. Fill the gaps
Empty space lets items move and break. Fill gaps with crumpled paper or foam so nothing shifts.
4. Pack heavy items at the bottom
Place heavier items at the base and lighter, more delicate ones on top.
5. Stand plates on their edges
Plates are stronger on their edge than flat. Separate them with foam sheets.
6. Protect electronics
Keep original boxes if you have them. Otherwise use anti-static wrap, bubble wrap and a tight box. Take photos of cable connections before unplugging.
7. Wrap furniture corners
Use blankets, corner guards and stretch film to protect polished surfaces and glass tops.
8. Seal and reinforce
Tape the bottom and top of each box in an H pattern so it can carry the weight.
9. Label clearly
Write “Fragile — This Side Up” on at least two sides, and the room name for easy unpacking.
